BORN FREE - Ilvy Njiokiktjien

While working in South Africa in 2007, Dutch photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien fell under the spell of the born frees; the generation born after the abolition of apartheid. Njiokiktjien portrays the young generation in her own personal and sometimes intimate way. 'There is equality on paper, but a majority of young people believe that white South Africans still have better opportunities because the legacy of centuries of inequality has not yet been worked out.'

Youth of south africa

In the exhibition 'BORN FREE', Njiokiktjien uses penetrating photos, film, and stories to show how the youth of South Africa are doing now. She spent a week in a white nationalist boot camp, met young people in a ghetto, portrayed ´the upper class´, and also photographed the creative class of fashion designers and musicians.

AWARDS

The (multimedia) project Afrikaner Blood was awarded two World Press Photo awards. In 2014 she was the first female photographer to win the Silver Camera with a photo taken during Nelson Mandela's funeral and became the first Photographer of the Netherlands.

The exhibition was made possible with support from Canon and the Prince Bernard Culture Fund North Holland.
