Remembering Mandela- Ilvy Njiokiktjien en Gideon Mendel
5 December 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of South African anti-apartheid fighter and politician Nelson Mandela (1918). In Remembering Mandela, we go back in time with two series by Dutch documentary photographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien. She shows the impact of grief and mourning at the time of Mandela’s death. In addition, with the contribution of South African photographer Gideon Mendel, we recall the man who played a key role in the abolition of apartheid in South Africa. Lastly, thanks to contributions by German journalists Bartholomäus Grill and Fritz Schaap of the newspaper der Spiegel, we read about the current situation in the country, more than 20 years after the abolition of apartheid.

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid fighter and politician. He had been politically active since 1944 and was imprisoned for 27 years because of his role as leader of the military branch of the African National Congress (ANC), a political group formed to represent the interests of the people of South Africa. He was released again in 1990, and in 1993 he and President F.W. de Klerk received the Nobel Peace Prize for ensuring the abolition of apartheid laws in 1991. In the first free elections after Apartheid, in 1994, 62% of voters voted for the ANC and Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first president of color. During his years as president, he fought for a new South Africa in which black and white people lived together in peace.
